As we celebrate our 50th birthday today, we’re taking a moment to journey through the decades, to bring back plenty of nostalgia and pride. From the ground-breaking launch of Press 11 in 1973 to the cutting-edge automated workflows in Knowledge Publish, our evolution mirrors the dynamic shifts in technology and the media landscape. The memories of our greatest achievements resurfaced has painted a vivid picture of growth and adaptability, providing a profound sense of pride for everything our company has accomplished.
In the ever-changing world of technology, we haven’t just kept pace; we’ve led the way in crafting transformative solutions. We’ve watched as newspapers came together to form powerful media groups like Newsquest, evolving from local printed publications to embracing the digital realm. Our journey reflects the human spirit of innovation that defines the heart and soul of the publishing industry.
Celebrating 50 years of PCS means reflecting on a rich history marked by transformative milestones. In the 1980s, Press 11 made its indelible mark by venturing into the wider newspaper publishing markets, laying the foundation for PCS’ success in the industry.
Fast-forward to the 1990s, PCS reshaped the landscape with the launch of ABS and NCS. This pivotal moment transformed advertising sales and circulation management for publishers. Then with the introduction of Pulse, we streamlined advert production, and added a new dimension to our suite of offerings.
In the vibrant 2000s, we welcomed PropertyNet, a game-changer in property advertising designed to craft consistent and professional property adverts for newspapers. This period also marked the early days of developing our newest CMS, Knowledge, set to replace our existing editorial system, Adapt. Even in its early stages, Knowledge celebrated a significant win, grabbing the InterSystems Innovator Award and showcasing the human touch behind our technological innovations!
The 2010s were a time of ongoing evolution. In 2011, the introduction of Knowledge revolutionised publishers’ editorial workflows, while PropertyNet soared to new heights, securing a substantial contract that generated revenue during its tenure with Countrywide. Fast forward to 2018, and Knowledge Prospect emerged as the successor to our legacy solution ABS, championing multi-channel advertising and reaffirming our dedication to leading the way in industry advancements.
The 2020s ushered in unprecedented challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic, fundamentally altering the industry landscape. Digital news became a lifeline for survival, and PCS took the lead in providing essential support to ensure our customers thrived in this new environment. Amidst these shifts, Pulse underwent a significant transformation, being rebuilt from the ground up to ensure cutting-edge efficiency in advert production.
50 years of PCS is not just about looking back; it’s a testament to our commitment to innovation and excellence. As we embark on a new chapter with National World PLC, Managing Director Matt Whiles reflects on this significant anniversary:
“Reaching the 50-year milestone is a celebration of the dedication and innovation that has defined PCS throughout the years. Our journey has been marked by resilience, adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of providing cutting-edge solutions to the publishing industry.” Within this reflection, Matt Whiles takes a moment to express heartfelt gratitude:
“I want to extend my sincere thanks to our current employees and senior management, who have worked relentlessly to ensure that our products are not only supported, but consistently improved. They are the heartbeat of PCS, and their dedication is what makes us great.”
He underscores that age is merely a number, and PCS stands steadfast in its commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s achievable.
“In an industry defined by constant change, we recognise the need to stay at the forefront of innovation. Our 50 years exemplify our capacity to evolve and adapt to the ever-shifting landscape. We’re not resting on our laurels; instead, we’re positioned to persist in delivering the industry’s premier solutions for years to come.”
The commitment to excellence and innovation that has fuelled our success over the past five decades is a driving force for what’s to come. Matt Whiles emphasises the vision for the future:
“We are immensely thankful to all who have played a part in our success. Past and present staff and customers alike. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re not just reflecting on the past, but looking forward with enthusiasm. Our goal is clear: to continue leading the way in providing unparalleled solutions, staying at the forefront of industry advancements, and ensuring that PCS remains synonymous with innovation.”
We marked this significant occasion at our new location in Grosvenor House, commemorating it with shared memories, delightful treats, and a touch of friendly competition with our 50-question quiz. Raising a glass (non-alcoholic of course) to the next era of PCS – where age is a symbol of experience, wisdom, and an unyielding commitment to shaping the future of the publishing software industry.
Since July, we’ve been crafting the “Fifty Years of PCS” series, taking a trip down memory lane to revisit our company’s achievements and reminisce about nostalgic pop culture. It’s been a genuine pleasure diving into our archives and rediscovering what makes our company special. If you missed it, then head to our LinkedIn page and relive the good old days.
Here’s to Fifty Years… and many more ahead. Cheers!
